United States - 1821 - CHEROKEE BECOMES THE FIRST WRITTEN NATIVE AMERICAN LANGUAGE
After 12 years of work Sequoyah, a Cherokee Scholar, creates a written form of the Cherokee language. The Cherokee people call books "talking leaves", and learning to read becomes important to thousands of Cherokee people.
